Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TR

What is Testosterone Replacement Therapy?

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is a treatment used to increase testosterone levels in men who have low testosterone levels due to aging, medical conditions, or other factors. It helps alleviate symptoms associated with low testosterone levels, such as fatigue, mood swings, and decreased libido.

Who is a candidate for TRT?

Men who experience symptoms of low testosterone and have been diagnosed with hypogonadism (low testosterone) through medical evaluation and blood tests are potential candidates for TRT. A thorough consultation with a healthcare provider is essential to determine if TRT is appropriate for you.

Is there an age recommendation for TRT?

TRT is generally recommended for adult men who have been diagnosed with low testosterone levels through a blood test and are experiencing symptoms. While it is most commonly used in men over 40, younger men with clinically low testosterone levels may also be candidates. It's important to consult with a healthcare provider to determine if TRT is suitable for your specific age and health condition.

Who is not a candidate for TRT?

TRT may not be suitable for:

  • Men who have normal testosterone levels
  • Men with prostate or breast cancer
  • Men with untreated severe sleep apnea
  • Men with untreated heart failure
  • Men with a history of blood clots
  • Men with elevated red blood cell counts
  • Adolescents, as it can affect natural growth and development Always consult a healthcare provider to evaluate your individual risks and benefits

What should be considered regarding family planning when undergoing TRT?

TRT can significantly reduce sperm production, which can affect fertility. Men planning to conceive should discuss this with their healthcare provider.   Alternative treatments to boost testosterone without affecting sperm production may be considered. In some cases, fertility-preserving options such as sperm banking prior to starting TRT can be explored.

Can TRT be stopped once started?

TRT is usually a lifelong treatment for those with chronic low testosterone levels.  Abruptly stopping TRT can lead to a return of symptoms.  However, when combined with diet & lifestyle changes that promote hormone health, TRT can be a great addition to your plan temporarily.  Always consult your healthcare provider before making any changes to your treatment plan.
